Veterans Day falls on November 11th of every year and originated as Armistice Day on November 11th, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day in 1954 in order to honor all veterans that had served in an American war. Canada and Great Britain, amongst others, also honor veterans of World War I & II with Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday. It’s also known that some countries can be found observing two minutes of silence at 11 AM every November 11th. The United States Veterans Day, unlike Memorial Day, honors all veterans, living or deceased, for their service in the United States Armed Forces. Continue reading
Hurricane Florence hit the coast of North Carolina on Friday morning and left disaster in its wake. We are overwhelmed by the number of people we have seen giving back and looking for ways to contribute to disaster relief since Florence struck. As Sylvia Mathews Burwell once said, “While natural disasters capture headlines and national attention short-term, the work of recovery and rebuilding is long-term.” Our beautiful coast is looking at a long road to restoration but we as a community can help in numerous ways.
